Nosework
Nosework – Foundations 101

The sport of nosework was introduced in 2010 and is based on the work scent detection dogs are trained to do- locate drugs, bombs and other illegal contraband.  However, since this is a sport activity, the dogs in Nosework are trained to search for the scents of several essential oils instead.   We begin to teach this skill by asking the dogs to hunt for food rewards hidden in boxes.  We vary the location of the food reward boxes to build their confidence and keep the game interesting with mild challenges.

Pre-requisite: Basic obedience skills and ability to walk politely on a leash.

Time Frame: This class lasts 8 weeks

Cost: $150.00 (Students who continue on past 2 sessions of any dog sport class get $10 off!)

The Foundations 101 classes will be held on Tuesday nights at 8:15pm.  Sessions start on:

  • To be announced.
Nosework – Foundations 102 – Expanded Search Games

We take the concepts that the dog has learned with Box Games and Food Rewards and begin to introduce the four search elements that the dog will need to become proficient at in order to compete: Container searches, interior searches, exterior searches and vehicle searches. This is just an introduction so the dog has some familiarity with the concepts before they are introduced to scent in the next set of classes. If a strong foundation is built, less mistakes will be made and the dog will move along quickly in the learning process.

Pre-requisite: Foundations 101 or a comparable class at another facility.

Time Frame: This class lasts 8 weeks

COST: $150.00 (Students who continue on past 2 sessions of any dog sport class get $10 off!)

The Foundations 102 classes will be held on Tuesday nights at 8:15pm. Sessions start on:

  • Tuesday January 3rd, 2017 at 8:15pm
Nosework- Foundations 103 – Introduction to Odor

In this class, we will use what the dog has learned searching for the Primary Food Reward and introduce odor. We will go back to the basic box searches in the first four weeks, but will be searching for scent paired with food, and then repeat the four element search exercises in the last four weeks. Odor Recognition Tests will also be discussed and practice runs will be set up. Successful completion of this class will allow the dog to move on to Continuing Nosework classes.

Time Frame: This class lasts 8 weeks

COST: $150.00 (Students who continue on past 2 sessions of any dog sport class get $10 off!)

Prerequisite: Successful completion of Foundations 101 and 102, or comparable classes at another facility.

The Introduction to Odor class will be held on Tuesdays at 8:15. Sessions start on:

  • Tuesday February 28th, 2017 at 8:15pm
CONTINUING NOSEWORK

Dogs in this class will be worked on exercises to strengthen their search abilities to find the source of the target odor. Searches will include paired hides, unpaired hides, and blind hides. We will also work on staying at the source of the odor, reading our dog’s body language, and handler skills. Problem solving skills for the dogs will be set up and intertwined with easier searches to keep the game fun. We will work outside as much as the weather allows so that dogs and handlers become accustomed to the challenges of working in difference environmental conditions. These conditions will affect how the dog will work to the source of the target odor. This is a skill building class which is meant to be repeated as the team works towards competing in trials.

Prerequisite: Successful completion of Foundations 103

Time Frame: This class lasts 8 weeks.

Cost: $150.00 (Students who continue on past 2 sessions of any dog sport class get $10 off!)
