Nosework – Foundations 101

The sport of nosework was introduced in 2010 and is based on the work scent detection dogs are trained to do- locate drugs, bombs and other illegal contraband. However, since this is a sport activity, the dogs in Nosework are trained to search for the scents of several essential oils instead. We begin to teach this skill by rewarding the dog for sniffing a container with the target odors. We proceed to very easy searches using boxes and reward with food every time the dog locates the odor, eventually adding searches that are mildly challenging to keep the game interesting.

Prerequisite: Basic obedience skills and ability to walk politely on a leash.

Time Frame: This class lasts 6 weeks

Cost: $150.00

The Foundations 101 classes will be held on Tuesday nights at 8:15pm.  Sessions start on:

  • Dates: To Be Announced
Nosework – Foundations 102 – Expanded Search Games

We take the concepts that the dog has learned with Box Games and Food Rewards and begin to introduce the four search elements that the dog will need to become proficient at in order to compete: Container searches, interior searches, exterior searches and vehicle searches. By the end of 6 weeks, the dog will be searching for all three target odors in simple searches that encompass all four types of search elements found in competition, and will be ready to move to the Continuing Nosework class.

Prerequisite: Foundations 101 or a comparable class at another facility.

Time Frame: This class lasts 6 weeks

COST: $150.00

The Foundations 102 classes will be held on Tuesday nights at 8:15pm. Sessions start on:

  • Dates: To Be Announced

Dogs in this class will be worked on exercises to strengthen their search abilities to find the source of the target odor. We will also work on staying at the source of the odor, reading our dog’s body language, and handler skills. Problem solving skills for the dogs will be set up and intertwined with easier searches to keep the game fun. We will work outside as much as the weather allows so that dogs and handlers become accustomed to the challenges of working in difference environmental conditions. These conditions will affect how the dog will work to the source of the target odor. This is a skill building class which is meant to be repeated as the team works towards competing in trials.

Prerequisite: Successful completion of Nosework 102 or previous nosework classes at another facility.

Time Frame: This class lasts 6 weeks.

Cost: $130.00
